The importance of fluid

Fluid is essential for life. The human body is made up of approximately 60% water.

We need fluid for many reasons, including: • to carry nutrients around the body in the blood• to help chemical reactions in our body take place• to replace loss of fluid through sweating and breathing • to get rid of waste products through urine

Many people don’t recognise the signs of dehydration. These may include: • dark urine • small volume of urine excreted • headaches • tiredness and lack of concentration

It is recommended that we drink 6–8 glasses (approximately 1.5–2 litres) of fluid every day to keep well hydrated. This can be in the form of any fluids, eg water, milk, tea or coffee.* Diluted squashes, fruit juices, smoothies and fizzy drinks contain sugar and are best taken at meal times when they are less damaging to teeth.

If there is a spell of very hot weather or we are physically active, our fluid requirements increase because we lose more fluid through sweating and breathing faster. It is therefore necessary to drink more fluids during these times to keep our bodies cool and hydrated.

*Tea and coffee contain caffeine (which in large quantities makes you want to urinate) so it is recommended that drinks are varied throughout the day.
